Comarca de Guna Yala

Comarca de Guna Yala

Guna Yala is the autonomous region of the Guna people on Panama's Caribbean coast, best known for the San Blas Islands.

Guna Yala is the autonomous territory of the Guna people on Panama's Caribbean coast. Most visitors know it as the San Blas Islands, a chain of low, palm-fringed islands offshore. The Guna govern the region under their own rules, so entry, boats and island stays involve community fees and customs that differ from the rest of Panama. People go for the islands, the traditional Guna villages and a slower pace than on the mainland.

Boats to the islands often leave from Cartí, and visitors either make day trips or stay overnight. The dry season, roughly December to April, is the usual choice for calmer seas. Island accommodation is simple, so set your expectations accordingly. In villages, dress modestly and ask before taking photographs of people. Plan at least two nights to see more than one island group and to allow for weather delays.
