Myanmar, also called Burma, is a country in Southeast Asia and the largest in mainland Southeast Asia by area. It borders India, Bangladesh, China, Laos and Thailand, and its southern and southwestern coast faces the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal. Most people live in the valley of the Irrawaddy, the longest river, which flows about 2,170 km to the Gulf of Martaban. Yangon is the largest city and commercial hub. Naypyidaw is the capital.
Bagan, the former capital of the Pagan Kingdom, is known for the Buddhist temples that rulers and wealthy patrons built there, more than 10,000 in the capital zone. Yangon has the Shwedagon Pagoda, a major Buddhist site. The cool season, from November to late February, suits sightseeing best, while March and April bring the hottest weather. Civil war has continued since the 2021 military takeover, and foreign visitors need a special travel permit for areas where fighting continues. Check current travel advice before you book.
Five things to know before Myanmar
- Read the current travel advisory first
Governments including the UK and US advise against all travel to all or large parts of Myanmar. Most travel insurance will not cover you where your government advises against travel. UK travel advice
- Check which states and regions are off limits
UK advice against all travel covers many states and regions, including Rakhine, Kachin, Chin, Sagaing and northern Shan. Much of the rest is essential travel only, and the map changes often.
- Expect travel restrictions at short notice
The UK says the security situation can worsen quickly and the military regime can introduce travel restrictions at any time. Build in a way out before you commit.
- Check visa rules for your passport before you fly
Most visitors need a visa arranged before travel. Rules and valid entry points change, so check with an official source for your passport, not a third-party visa site. Visas and entry
- Read your insurance policy before you book
Check the clause on government travel advice. Traveling to an area your government advises against can void medical and evacuation cover for the whole trip. Travel insurance

Myanmar FAQ
Is it safe to travel to Myanmar right now?
The UK advises against all travel to much of Myanmar and all but essential travel to most of the rest, and the US rates it Level 4, do not travel. Read your government's current advisory before making any plans.
Will my travel insurance cover Myanmar?
Often not. Most standard policies exclude areas where your government advises against travel, so check the exact wording and the regions named before you buy.
Do I need a visa for Myanmar?
Most visitors do, arranged before travel. Which passports qualify and which entry points accept foreigners can change, so confirm with an official source.
Can I visit Bagan or Inle Lake?
Check the current advisory map first. Both sit in regions covered by government warnings, and road access between them depends on conditions that change quickly.
What time zone is Myanmar in?
UTC+6:30 all year, with no daylight saving. That is half an hour behind Thailand.
