Bagan is an archaeological zone on the Irrawaddy River in central Myanmar. It contains thousands of Buddhist temples, pagodas, and monasteries, built mainly between the 11th and 13th centuries, when Bagan was the center of a powerful kingdom. Brick structures stand across a broad, dry plain. The area suits travelers interested in history, architecture, and Buddhist culture.
Visit temple compounds, look for differences in their towers and murals, and take in views across the plain. The sites are spread out, so plan how you will travel between them. November to February is the cooler, drier period and often the most comfortable time to visit. Allow at least two days to see several areas without rushing, or stay longer for a slower pace.
