Yangon is Myanmar’s largest city, in the south of the country on the Irrawaddy Delta near the Gulf of Martaban. The administrative capital moved to Naypyidaw, about 320 km north, but Yangon remains the country’s main commercial and cultural centre. Its downtown grid dates to British rule and contains a large collection of colonial-era buildings, alongside markets, churches and temples.
Shwedagon Pagoda, a gilded stupa at the city centre, is Myanmar’s most sacred Buddhist pagoda and Yangon’s best-known landmark. Sule Pagoda stands in the old commercial district. Kandawgyi Lake and nearby parks offer time outdoors, while Bogyoke Market is a central-city stop. The dry season runs from November to April; pagoda festivals take place from November to March, including the Shwedagon Pagoda Festival in March. Hlawga National Park and the Allied War Memorial are day trips on the city’s outskirts. Yangon is a city-focused destination for visitors interested in religious sites, architecture and markets.
