Inle Lake lies in the mountains of Shan State in eastern Myanmar. The lake is known for villages built on stilts, gardens cultivated on floating beds and Intha communities whose lives are closely connected to the water. Boat trips are the main way to see the lakeside settlements and gardens. Local markets and religious sites add cultural stops, though the lake is the main reason to come.
The cooler, drier months from November to February are a comfortable time to visit. Two or three days gives you time for a boat trip and a slower look at the lakeside communities. Add time if you want to visit other parts of Shan State. Inle suits travelers who want scenery and cultural encounters at an unhurried pace. It is less suited to trips focused on nightlife or a packed schedule of major urban sights. Plan your stay around transport, since getting between lakeside places often involves boat travel.
