Tivat is a coastal town in the central part of the Bay of Kotor in Montenegro. It is the centre of the municipality of the same name, the smallest in the country by area, and the youngest town on the bay. Tourism, marinas and yachting are its main activities. The former naval shipyard is now Porto Montenegro, a luxury resort and marina for superyachts. Tivat Airport lies in the Grbalj valley about 3 km from the centre and is one of Montenegro's two international airports, but it does not operate at night.
Kotor is about 10 km away, Herceg Novi 19 km, Budva 23 km and Dubrovnik 80 km. Sights include the church of St Anton, dating from 1373, the old settlement of Gornja Lastva at about 300 m above town, and Flowers' Island, one of the most visited sites. Plavi Horizonti is a sandy beach near town and one of its most visited. About 80% of airport passengers travel from May to September, so the busiest months are then.

Is Tivat worth visiting?
As a base it suits easy arrivals, marina dining and a flat waterfront. For historic streets, spend your days in Kotor and Perast and use Tivat for the airport and a calm evening.
How far is Tivat Airport from the town?
The tourism board gives 4 km from the Tivat center. Onward times to Kotor or Budva depend on traffic, so add time in July and August.
Is Tivat better than Kotor as a base?
Tivat is flatter, newer and closer to the airport; Kotor has the old town and more sights on foot. Choose Tivat for convenience, Kotor for atmosphere.
What is Porto Montenegro?
The tourism board describes it as a harbor and nautical resort with high-end restaurants and shops, and it is one of the ports where yachts can clear entry.
How do you get from Tivat Airport to Kotor?
By taxi or bus. The airport guide for Budva sets out the taxi rules and the bus option, which apply on the Kotor run too; this guide quotes no fares.
