Herceg Novi is a seaside town in Montenegro, on the western side of the Bay of Kotor, close to the Croatian border. Most of the town faces the sea. The seafront walk is the easiest way to get your bearings, and from there the streets climb into the old town, where stairs lead between old fortresses. Inside the old walls you will find the clock tower, Forte Mare and the Kanli Kula tower, and the streets are small enough to walk end to end.
The town suits two kinds of trip. The first is a spring visit during the Mimosa Festival, when the town's mimosa trees are in bloom. The second is a slow seaside base, with Kotor and Dubrovnik within day-trip range. Spring and early autumn are the easiest seasons for walking the stairs, and two or three days is enough for the town itself. For a quieter stay, Igalo has a thermal spa and is a short bus or taxi ride from the center.

Is Herceg Novi worth visiting?
Yes, for fortresses, a long seafront walk and a quieter feel than Budva. Expect stairs, and pair it with Kotor or Dubrovnik for a fuller trip.
How far is Herceg Novi from Dubrovnik?
It is a cross-border road trip, with the crossings at Debeli brijeg or Kobila per the tourism board. Allow extra time for passport checks in summer.
When is the Mimosa Festival in Herceg Novi?
The tourism board describes it as a spring celebration; the exact dates are set by the organizers each year, so confirm them before you book.
Is Herceg Novi a good base for the Bay of Kotor?
It suits the western end and a Croatia combo. Kotor and Perast are easier on foot and by bus from a base in Kotor itself.
Do you need cash in Herceg Novi?
Montenegro uses the euro. Carry some cash for small cafes, buses and beach loungers, and use ATMs inside banks where possible, as UK advice suggests.
