Budva is a coastal town on Montenegro's Adriatic coast and the country's main beach resort. The old town sits on a small peninsula inside medieval walls, with narrow stone streets, churches, and a seafront lined with cafes and bars. Beyond the walls, the Riviera runs along the coast as a string of beaches backed by hotels and restaurants. Travelers can reach it by road from Tivat or Podgorica airports.

Budva suits a beach trip, a stay built around evenings in town, or a base for exploring Montenegro by car. Summer is the busiest season, when beaches and the old town fill up and evenings run late. Spring and early autumn are calmer, and the sea can still be warm in September. Three nights gives time for the old town, a couple of beaches, and an evening out.

Budva in five

  1. Pick a beach for the mood, not the nameThe tourism board lists Jaz at 1,000 m, Slovenian Beach at about 1,600 m and Bečići at about 2,000 m. Longer beaches give more room; short ones such as Richard's Head (about 150 m) have less room.Budva beaches compared
  2. Decide your airport before you book a roomTivat and Podgorica are Montenegro's two airports, and Budva sits on the road between them and the mountains. The transfer choice changes cost and time more than the hotel does.Airport to Budva
  3. Leave early for summer flights and day tripsThe coast road slows in the summer tourist season, so build extra time into flight days and the Kotor or Sveti Stefan runs. The airport guide compares taxis, buses and rental cars for the transfer itself.
  4. Check the Dubrovnik catamaran datesAdriatic Lines lists a Budva to Dubrovnik day trip at 75 EUR adult in 2026, with early one-way sailings at 50 EUR. The board lists Budva as a seasonal sea border crossing, 1 May to 30 October.Ferry page

Budva FAQ

Is Budva worth visiting?

It suits beach and nightlife trips: the tourism board counts about 100,000 swimmers a day on the Riviera in summer. For quiet and history, base in Kotor or Petrovac and visit Budva for a day.

How many days do you need in Budva?

Two nights cover the old town and a beach day. Four nights let you add Sveti Stefan and a Kotor day without rushing. A beach week works if you choose Bečići or Rafailovići.

Where is the best place to stay in Budva?

The old town for nights out, Slovenska for beach and buses, Bečići for resort-style weeks, and Rafailovići or Pržno for coves. The where-to-stay guide compares them.

Budva or Kotor: which is better?

Budva for beaches and nightlife, Kotor for the walled town and the bay. They are a short drive apart, so many trips use one as the base and visit the other. The comparison guide settles it.

When is the best time to visit Budva?

June and September give warm sea with more room. July and August bring heat, crowds and slow coast roads. May and October suit walking and old-town visits more than swimming.
