The Peloponnese is a large peninsula at the southern tip of mainland Greece, also known as Morea, a name still used in everyday speech. The Isthmus of Corinth joins it to central Greece, and the Corinth Canal, built in the late 19th century, cuts through the isthmus. Most of the interior is mountainous. Mount Taygetus, at about 2,407 metres, is the highest peak, and lowland plains run along the west coast, in the Argolid and along the Evrotas valley in the south.

People come for the ancient sites. Mycenae, Pylos and Tiryns were centers of the Bronze Age Mycenaean civilization, and the first Olympic Games were held at Olympia in 776 BC. Epidaurus was a religious and healing center, and Mystras, near ancient Sparta, grew into a Byzantine fortress town. Nafplio, on the east coast, was the first capital of independent Greece. Summers are hot in the lowlands around Sparta, where highs can exceed 36 °C, so plan visits to the open-air sites for cooler hours.

Peloponnese FAQ

How many days do you need for the Peloponnese?

Five days covers Nafplio, Mycenae, Epidaurus and a night in the Mani. Seven days adds Olympia or Monemvasia. Three days only does Nafplio and its two ancient sites.

Can you do the Peloponnese on public transport?

Partly. Buses link Athens, Nafplio, Olympia and Kalamata, but villages and sites between them are slow or unserved. A rental car makes a loop far easier.

Is Nafplio worth visiting?

Yes. It has a pleasant old town and harbor and is the easiest base for Mycenae and Epidaurus. Many visitors stay two nights.

Where should you stay in the Peloponnese?

Nafplio first, then Monemvasia or the Mani depending on your route. Use Kalamata if you fly into the southwest. Avoid one-night stops in every town.

Is the Peloponnese better than the islands?

It suits culture, driving and food rather than beaches. Choose it for ancient sites and mountains, and the islands for a pure beach week. The two combine well with Athens in the middle.
