Monemvasia is a small historic town in Laconia, in the southeast Peloponnese. It sits on a rock joined to the mainland by a sandy isthmus about 400 m long, and a bridge on the western side links it to the EO86 road. Founded in the 6th century, it is one of Europe's oldest continuously inhabited fortified towns. Its Italian name, Malvasia, gave the sweet, sun-dried wine its name.
The lower town is walled on three sides, and many of its streets are too narrow for vehicles, so you walk between sights, sometimes past donkeys. A cobbled path climbs through a gate to the upper town, which is no longer inhabited and holds a 12th-century Byzantine church and a fortress ruin. The rock has no natural water, so three large public cisterns in the upper town collected rainwater. Some cliff paths run beside steep drops. Summers are very hot, with a recorded high of 45.2 °C on 26 June 2007.
Monemvasia in five
- Sleep inside the walls for one nightRestored stone houses line the car-free lanes, and the town is at its best after day-trippers leave. Luggage is carried by hand from the gate, so pack light.
- Park outside and cross the causewaySpace near the gate is limited, and most visitors leave the car at Gefyra on the mainland side. Ask your hotel where to park and how bags reach the room.
- Climb to the Upper Town in the morningThe ruins and the Agia Sofia church sit on the cliff top, with little shade and loose stone. Go early, wear sturdy shoes and bring water, and check the culture ministry for hours.
- Plan a long drive from AthensThe road from Athens takes around four to five hours, and buses run via Sparta with changes. Add a night in Nafplio to break the journey.Nafplio
- Add Elafonisos for a beach dayA short ferry from Pounta, about an hour by road from Monemvasia, reaches Elafonisos and its Simos beach. Cars queue for the boat in August, so go on foot or in the morning.

Read the guideMonemvasia FAQ
Is Monemvasia worth visiting?
Yes for a rare, intact medieval town on a sea rock with no cars inside. It is small, so most visitors stay one night and combine it with Nafplio, Mystras or Elafonisos.
How many days do you need in Monemvasia?
One night is enough for the Lower Town, the Upper Town ruins and a sunset walk. Add a second to relax or visit Elafonisos.
How do you get to Monemvasia from Athens?
By car in about four to five hours, or by KTEL bus via Sparta with changes. There is no train, and no airport nearby, so a rental car is the easier option.
Can you drive into Monemvasia?
Cars stop outside the walls, where parking is limited. Most visitors leave the car at Gefyra and walk across the causeway, so confirm luggage arrangements with your hotel.
Where should you stay, inside or outside the walls?
Inside for atmosphere, quiet evenings and stone-built rooms, with steps and carried luggage. Gefyra suits a budget, easy parking and a shorter walk to the beach.
