The Mani is a limestone peninsula in the south of the Peloponnese, where hills drop to the sea between olive groves and stone villages. People come for the Maniot tower houses, tall stone homes built by families who needed defence during years of local feuding. Many towers still stand in the villages. The coast runs between the Messenian Gulf to the west and the Laconian Gulf to the east.
The Diros caves on the west coast are the main underground sight, and boats take visitors through the cave system. Public buses are limited, so a car is the practical way to move between villages, where the roads wind slowly. Pick one base and make day trips from it. Plan at least a few days to cover the drives. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons, while summer is hot.
