Messinia is the southwest corner of the Peloponnese, on the Greek mainland, and the place to go for Venetian castles on the coast, a horseshoe-shaped beach and olive groves. The castles at Methoni and Koroni stand on the coast, and both have walls you can walk. Inland, olive groves cover the hills around Kalamata, the region's main city, which has the airport. Pylos, on Navarino Bay, is a smaller harbour town, and the bay was the site of a naval battle in 1827 that helped secure Greek independence. The ruins of Ancient Messene sit inland near Mavromati.
Voidokilia is a horseshoe-shaped bay near Methoni. Public transport between villages is limited, so a rental car is the practical way to see the region. Spring to early autumn is the best time, when the sea is warm enough to swim. Four or five days covers the castles, Ancient Messene and a couple of beaches, and a base in Kalamata or Pylos keeps the drives short.
Messinia in five
- Base on the Pylos coast for beaches and castlesPylos, Gialova and Methoni put Voidokilia, a lagoon and two big castles within 20 to 30 minutes of each other. Kalamata suits city comfort and the road to the Mani.Kalamata
- See Voidokilia early or lateThe circular beach and lagoon are below a hill with Nestor's Cave, and the walk from the car park is short. Parking fills by midday in August, so arrive in the morning or at sunset.
- Stop at Ancient Messene on the wayThe site near Mavromati has a stadium, a theater and a fortified gate in a quiet valley. Allow about two hours, and check opening hours with the culture ministry before you drive.
- Check hours at the castles of Methoni and KoroniBoth Venetian fortresses are open-air with seasonal hours. Methoni has a long stone causeway and a sea tower, and Koroni sits above a village with a small beach.
- Use a small car on narrow coast roadsVillage roads are narrow and signs vary, so rent a compact car, download offline maps and fill up in towns. Buses link Kalamata and Pylos but not the beaches.Getting around Greece

Where should you stay in Messinia?
On the Pylos coast around Pylos, Gialova or Methoni for beaches and castles, or in Kalamata for a city base and the Mani. Most visitors choose the coast and do day trips.
How many days do you need in Messinia?
Four to six days cover the Pylos coast, Ancient Messene and one day around Kalamata or the Mani. Two days works only for a quick tour.
When is the best time to visit Messinia?
April to June and September to October for warm sea and fewer crowds. August is hot and busy, and the olive harvest in late autumn is a good time for tastings.
