Vis is an island in the Adriatic Sea in Split-Dalmatia County, Croatia. The main way in is the ferry from Split. Vis Town, the island's main town, sits on a harbor on the north coast. Komiža, a fishing town on the west side, has an old harbor and a fort.

Stiniva is a small cove with steep sides, reached on foot down a steep path. Boats from Komiža and Vis run trips to the Blue Cave on the islet of Biševo. Vis suits travelers who want a few towns and days of swimming and boat trips over a long list of sights. Late spring and early autumn are calmer for swimming and walking, while midsummer is busiest. Plan several nights, since the ferry, boat trips and cove walks take time. Wear sturdy shoes for the cove path.

Vis Island in five

  1. Book the Blue Cave through KomižaThe cave can only be visited with the concession holder, from Mezoporat cove, and the visit lasts about 40 minutes. Tickets are sold at the Komiža Nautical Centre, and agencies across Dalmatia offer tours.
  2. Plan the cave visit for late morningThe Komiža tourist board says the best time is between 10 am and 2 pm, depending on the time of year, when sunlight passes the underwater entrance. Rough sea can stop the boats, so keep a spare day.
  3. Take the Split boat earlyKrilo lists a catamaran from Split to Vis via Milna on Brač and Hvar, and its pages give about 1 h 10 min to 1 h 20 min. Jadrolinija also serves Vis, so compare the car ferry if you bring a vehicle.Split
  4. Match the bus to the boatKomiža's tourist board says the Vis to Komiža bus is timed to the Jadrolinija ferry and Krilo catamaran, while the summer high-speed service is not connected. Book a taxi or a car for that leg.
  5. Budget for parking in KomižaThe public lot at Rogači charges €1.30 per hour, with 15 minutes free, and €16.00 for 24 hours. A day ticket does not allow re-entry, so park once and walk.

Vis Island FAQ

How do you get to Vis island?

Take the Jadrolinija ferry or the Krilo catamaran from Split. Krilo's route runs via Milna on Brač and Hvar. There is no airport, and the bus links the ferry port with Komiža.

How many days do you need on Vis?

Two nights cover Vis town, Komiža and a beach. A third night gives a spare day for the Blue Cave if the sea is rough. One day works only for the cave if you arrive early and leave late.

Can you visit the Blue Cave without a tour?

Entry is only with the concession holder, from Mezoporat cove, with tickets at the Komiža Nautical Centre. Many Dalmatian agencies also sell organized trips, so you can book either way.

Is Vis or Hvar better?

Vis is quieter and less polished, better for slow days and a Blue Cave trip. Hvar has more nightlife, more boats and a busier harbor. Choose by the evening you want.

Do you need a car on Vis?

A car or scooter helps for beaches such as Stiniva and for the road between Vis town and Komiža. The bus links the two, but its timetable follows the ferries.
