Coastal town with harbor and islands under blue sky

Pakleni Islands

The Pakleni Islands are a short water-taxi ride from Hvar Town, and visitors go for the swimming coves and beach restaurants.

The Pakleni Islands are a group of small, pine-covered islets off Hvar Town, on the Dalmatian coast of Croatia. Water taxis leave from the Hvar Town harbor and cross to the islands in a short ride southwest. Most people go for a swim, a long lunch at a beach restaurant, or both, without leaving the shore.

A half day covers one cove, and a full day lets you visit several. Check return boat times before you settle in, because the last boat back to town is the one to plan around. The islands are busiest in midsummer, so arrive early for a quieter spot. Late spring to early autumn is the season when the sea is warm enough for swimming. Pick this trip for an easy beach day close to town, not for a quiet stay.

Pakleni Islands in five

  1. Take a water taxi from Hvar portThe tourist board says taxi boats from Hvar port reach Stipanska on Marinkovac, and Jerolim can only be reached by boat. Agree the pickup time with the skipper before you land.Hvar
  2. Choose Palmižana for familiesVinogradišće, known as Palmižana, is partly pebble and partly sandy, and the tourist board calls it very interesting to families. You can reach it by boat or on foot from the bay where the ACI marina sits.
  3. Pick Jerolim for a choice of beachesJerolim has two pebble beaches on its north and south sides and a west-side spot for singles or couples, plus two places for food and beach facilities. It can only be reached by boat.
  4. Try Stipanska for rock swimmingStipanska on Marinkovac has a rocky coastline that gives swimmers a sense of seclusion, with a restaurant and bars along the coast for those who want company.
  5. Keep a margin for wind on the way backTaxi boats are private, so confirm the return time and a backup if the sea turns rough. Do not plan a tight ferry connection the same evening.

Pakleni Islands FAQ

How do you get to the Pakleni Islands?

By water taxi from the harbor in Hvar Town, which the tourist board lists for Stipanska, and by boat for Jerolim. Palmižana can also be reached on foot from the bay where the marina sits.

Which Pakleni island is best for families?

Palmižana, in Vinogradišće bay, is partly pebble and partly sandy and is described as very interesting for families. Jerolim has pebble beaches and food stops, and Stipanska is for rock swimmers.

Are the Pakleni Islands worth visiting?

Yes for a swim and a lunch away from Hvar Town, especially in the morning or late afternoon. They are busiest in July and August, so shoulder months give calmer coves.

Can you visit the Pakleni Islands without a tour?

Yes. Water taxis run from Hvar Town harbor, so you do not need to join a cruise. Agree the return pickup time before you land.

Is there food on the Pakleni Islands?

Yes. The tourist board lists restaurants and bars at Palmižana, Jerolim and Stipanska. Tables fill at lunchtime in summer, so book ahead and carry water for the walk.
