Pelješac Peninsula

Pelješac Peninsula

Pelješac is a long peninsula in southern Croatia, known for oysters from Mali Ston Bay, red wine from the steep Dingač slopes and the Ston walls.

Pelješac is a long, narrow peninsula on the Adriatic coast of southern Croatia, in Dalmatia. The road from Dubrovnik or Split is the usual way in by car. The peninsula is known for three things: the medieval Ston walls, among the longest fortification systems in Europe, oysters grown in Mali Ston Bay, and Plavac Mali red wine from vineyards at Dingač and Postup, planted on steep slopes above the sea.

Plan for slow driving. The roads wind along the coast and through hill villages, so distances look shorter on a map than they feel. The Pelješac Bridge, opened in 2022, carries the main road across the water from the mainland, and a ferry runs from Orebić to Korčula for travelers continuing to the island. Late spring and early autumn suit vineyard drives and outdoor tastings best, when summer heat is lower. Two or three days covers the main stops. Decide how far you drive each day before you book beds.

Pelješac Peninsula in five

  1. Cross the Pelješac Bridge, skip NeumHrvatske ceste built the bridge and its access roads to link the peninsula to the mainland, so drivers from the north no longer cross Bosnia's Neum corridor. Carry your passport anyway if you plan to go through Neum.
  2. Walk part of the Ston wallsThe Ston tourist board says the walls are 5.5 km, with 41 towers and 6 bastions, and describes them as the longest fortress system in Europe. Mali Ston is a kilometer away, or about 40 minutes on foot along the walls.
  3. Eat oysters in Mali StonThe Ston tourist board says oysters from Mali Ston Bay have been grown since Roman times. Eat them fresh at a local restaurant, and ask what is in season rather than assuming every table has them.
  4. Drive the wine road to Dingač and PostupThe peninsula's red wines come from the Plavac mali grape, with Dingač and Postup the best-known names. Book a tasting at a family winery, and keep the driver sober on the coastal road.
  5. Hop to Korčula from OrebićA short ferry links Orebić with Dominče on Korčula, so the peninsula works as the mainland end of an island trip. Check the timetable and book vehicle space in summer.Korčula

Pelješac Peninsula FAQ

What is Pelješac known for?

Wine, oysters and the Ston walls. The red Plavac mali grape grows at Dingač and Postup, Mali Ston Bay is known for oysters and mussels, and the walls run for 5.5 km.

How many days do you need on Pelješac?

One long day covers Ston, the walls and an oyster lunch. Two or three days add a winery visit, a beach and the Orebić ferry to Korčula. It also works as a drive-through between Dubrovnik and Split.

Is it worth visiting Ston?

Yes for the walls and the oysters, especially for a half day on the road. Walking the full wall in heat is hard, so go early or take only the stretch you want.

Do you need a car on Pelješac?

Yes for wineries and small villages, which are spread along a long peninsula. Without a car, a guided tour is the practical way to see Ston and a winery in one day.

Does the Pelješac Bridge avoid Bosnia?

It lets drivers reach the peninsula without crossing the Neum corridor, so a drive between Dubrovnik and the north stays in Croatia the whole way. Neum remains a short detour if you want it.
