Mljet is a long, wooded island in the Adriatic, off the southern coast of Croatia in Dubrovnik-Neretva County. Its western end is Mljet National Park, where two saltwater lakes, Veliko jezero and Malo jezero, are connected to the sea. On Veliko jezero, a small islet holds a Benedictine monastery, reached by boat. A ferry from the mainland lands at Sobra on the east coast, and many visitors reach the island on a day trip from Dubrovnik.
Mljet suits slow trips built around water and forest. You can walk or cycle the pine-covered paths and swim from the lakes. The island is quieter than the mainland, and in summer beds fill early, so book a place to stay before you arrive. Late spring to early autumn is the easiest season for the lakes and paths. Two nights leaves time to see the park without rushing.

How do I get to Mljet from Dubrovnik?
The park lists catamaran lines from Dubrovnik run by TP Line and others, and a Jadrolinija ferry from Prapratno on the Pelješac peninsula to Sobra in 45 minutes. Catamarans suit a day trip because they land at Pomena.
Is Mljet worth visiting?
Yes for a quiet national-park island: swimmable lakes, forest paths and a monastery on an islet. It is not a nightlife island, and a day trip from Dubrovnik gives only a few hours inside the park.
How many days do you need on Mljet?
One long day covers the lakes and St. Mary island. Two nights allow a bike loop, the Montokuc viewpoint and a relaxed swim. A third night adds the southern coves and the Odysseus cave area.
Can you swim in Mljet's lakes?
Yes. The park suggests stopping to swim at the Great Bridge, and rents canoes and kayaks at the Small Lake. Diving in the lakes is prohibited, and boats cannot enter the Soline channel or the lakes.
Do you need a car on Mljet?
Not inside the park, where paths, bikes, an electric train and a boat cover the main sites. A car or scooter helps for Sobra, the south and the far end of the island.
