Korčula is an island in southern Dalmatia, on Croatia's Adriatic coast. Its old town sits on a peninsula inside medieval walls, with narrow stone streets and a cathedral on the main square. The island is known for the Moreška, a sword dance with a long local history, and for its wines, including white Pošip and red Plavac Mali. Inland, the hills are green with pine and vineyards, and Lumbarda has quiet coves.
A slow trip suits the island best, built around walks in the old town, swims from quiet coves and wine tastings. Plan at least three nights to see the old town in the evening and spend a day by the coast. Late spring to early autumn is the season when the sea is warm enough for swimming. Try Pošip with local fish in the konobas.

Korčula Island FAQ
How do I get from Split to Korčula?
Take Krilo's catamaran via Hvar, which lists about 2 h 30 min to Korčula Town, or Jadrolinija's ferry to Vela Luka, about three hours on its line page. Vela Luka is on the western end, so plan a transfer to the old town.
Is Korčula worth visiting?
Yes, if you want a walled medieval town, sword-dance evenings and swimming coves without Hvar's nightlife. It rewards two to four days. Day visitors see the old town but miss the quiet evenings.
Where should I stay on Korčula?
Korčula Town for sights and dinners on foot, Lumbarda for beaches and vineyards, Vela Luka if you arrive by the Split ferry and want trails. Orebić on the mainland suits drivers coming from Dubrovnik.
When is the Moreška sword dance?
The tourist board lists 2026 shows on selected evenings from late April to mid October, at 9 pm in the Summer Theatre. Adults pay 20 EUR and children 4 to 14 pay 10 EUR. Check the calendar and book for your nights.
Do I need a car on Korčula?
Not to stay in the old town. A car, scooter or bike helps for Lumbarda's coves, wineries and the interior villages, since buses do not reach every cove. In July and August, book rentals early.
