South Australia is a state in southern Australia, with Adelaide on the coast as its capital. Most trips start there. The Barossa Valley is about an hour's drive northeast of the city and is known for shiraz and for the German settler traditions that still shape its food and churches. The Clare Valley, farther north, is known for riesling.
Further from the capital, the Flinders Ranges hold old, eroded peaks and gorges, with Wilpena Pound as the best-known landmark. The Eyre Peninsula, west of Adelaide, has a long coast known for seafood and wildlife. Kangaroo Island, reached by ferry from the south coast, is a separate leg. Spring and autumn suit the trip best, since inland summers run hot. Public transport does not reach most wineries, so plan on a car or a tour. A week gives time for one wine base and one longer leg.

How many days do you need in South Australia?
Seven days cover Adelaide, the Barossa or McLaren Vale and one more region, such as Kangaroo Island or the Flinders Ranges. Ten days lets you drive the Epicurean Way or add the Eyre Peninsula by air.
Is the Barossa a day trip from Adelaide?
Yes. The state tourism board puts it 50 to 60 minutes by car, though it also says a long day trip is better as two or three days. Hire a driver or join a tour if you plan on several cellar doors.
How far are the Flinders Ranges from Adelaide?
Allow at least 3.5 hours by road just to Port Augusta, and longer to reach Wilpena Pound or the outback towns. The tourism board suggests several days for the southern ranges, so it is not a day trip.
When is the best time to visit South Australia?
Autumn and spring suit wine touring and the ranges, with mild days and green hills. Summer can be hot for walking, and winter is cold and wet. Check which outback roads and campsites close in the heat.
Can you drive from Adelaide to Uluru?
Yes, as part of the Explorers Way toward Darwin, passing Coober Pedy and the Stuart Highway. It is a long outback drive, so most visitors fly to Yulara and drive in the region.
