National Wine Centre

Explore Australian winemaking displays and taste wines from across the country at Adelaide’s National Wine Centre, beside the Botanic Garden.

At the eastern edge of Adelaide Botanic Garden, the National Wine Centre brings Australian wine education and tasting together in a modern exhibition building. Its interactive displays trace winemaking from early pottery vessels to contemporary equipment, while the tasting room lets you compare wines from across Australia. You can also look around the wine cellar and small gallery, then stop at the cafe or Wined Bar for a drink and food. The daily 11 am Wine Discovery Journey adds a guided introduction to the history and methods of winemaking.

A building shaped around wine

National Wine Centre

The National Wine Centre opened in 2001 and is associated with the University of Adelaide. Its exterior combines timber, steel and glass in a form that recalls a section of a wine barrel. Inside, the open-plan spaces provide room for exhibitions, tastings, events and dining.

The centre sits just outside Adelaide Botanic Garden, near the corner of Hackney Road and Botanic Road. Its location makes it easy to combine a visit with time in the garden. The venue also has conference rooms, an event hall and a small gallery with floral and native-plant artwork.

The permanent exhibition introduces the history, technology, varieties and styles of wine. Interactive displays follow winemaking from early pottery jars to modern stainless-steel tanks. A touch-screen activity lets you create a virtual wine blend, offering a hands-on way to think about how different choices shape a wine.

The self-guided Wine Discovery Journey explores Australian winemaking history. A guided version is listed daily at 11 am for A$15. It is a useful option if you want a structured introduction before tasting, while the displays let you move at your own pace. The centre also holds wine classes, dinners and other events.

Taste wines from across Australia

The Wined Bar’s tasting area uses enomatic dispensers and has more than 120 Australian wines available to sample. You can select tasting measures or order a half or full glass, making it possible to compare several wines without committing to a full pour of each. The range includes wines from different Australian regions, including South Australia.

A tasting card covers 10 measures. A sommelier-led tasting is another way to learn about the wines and their regions. If you want to make a meal of the visit, the cafe and bar serve food alongside wine. Past menu choices have included focaccia, Thai chicken meatballs, gnocchi, steak and a vegetarian tart; the menu itself can change. Evening dining is limited to Friday through Sunday, so check availability and arrange a booking before you go.
