Adelaide is the capital and most populous city of South Australia, on the plains between Gulf St Vincent and the Mount Lofty Ranges. Colonel William Light designed the city centre as a grid with wide boulevards and a ring of parks, the Adelaide Parklands. The city was founded in 1836 as a planned capital for a freely settled colony and named after Queen Adelaide. The Kaurna are the traditional owners, and the city centre and Parklands carry the Kaurna name Tarndanya.
The city centre runs along North Terrace and King William Street. North Terrace holds the Art Gallery of South Australia, the State Library and the South Australian Museum, and the Festival Centre on the Torrens hosts much of the city's performing arts. Festivals cluster in early March, which locals call "Mad March". The Adelaide Hills and Mount Lofty Ranges are the main escape for walks, wineries and views. Summers are hot and dry, often above 40 °C, while June is the wettest month.

How many days do you need in Adelaide?
Two days cover the Central Market, the riverside and a gallery or museum. Three leave time for a wine-region day or the beach at Glenelg.
Is Adelaide worth visiting?
Yes if you like food, festivals and easy day trips rather than headline landmarks. Adelaide works best as a gateway to Kangaroo Island, the Barossa and Great Ocean Road drives.
When is Adelaide Fringe?
The 2027 Adelaide Fringe is listed for 19 February to 21 March 2027. It is the busiest period for rooms and venues, so book accommodation and popular shows well ahead.
Is Kangaroo Island a day trip from Adelaide?
Treat it as its own trip of two or more nights, not a rushed day. The Kangaroo Island guide covers the ferry and flight options, the Tour Pass and how the sights are spread across the island.
Where should I stay in Adelaide?
The city center suits first visits and short stays. North Adelaide is quieter and greener, and Glenelg suits beach time with a tram link to the center.
