Zimbabwe is a landlocked country in southern Africa, bordered by South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and Mozambique. Harare is the capital and largest city, and Bulawayo is the second largest. Victoria Falls on the Zambezi River, shared with Zambia, is among the largest waterfalls on Earth. Hwange is the country's largest national park, and the country has about 350 mammal species and more than 500 bird species.
History is the other draw. Great Zimbabwe, a medieval stone city near Masvingo, was a major trade center by the 13th century. The country's name probably comes from a Shona phrase meaning 'houses of stone', linked to those ruins. The Matobo Hills, about 35 km south of Bulawayo, have granite kopjes, smooth rock formations and wooded valleys. The rainy season usually runs from late October to March, and the Zambezi valley is very hot, so check the weather before you set your dates. Pick one or two regions for a short trip, because the main sites are spread across the country.
Five things to know before Zimbabwe
- Get your visa on arrival or as an e-Visa
Most visitors get a visa on arrival, usually valid for 30 days, or apply online first on the official e-Visa site, which lists the fee options. Bring US dollars in small notes to pay for it. Zimbabwe e-Visa
- Carry small US dollar notes
US dollars are the main currency for visitors, and change is often short. Bring small notes for visa fees, tips and markets.
- Use the KAZA UniVisa for Zambia day trips
For $50 it allows 30 days of travel between Zimbabwe and Zambia plus day trips to Botswana, available at Harare, Bulawayo and Victoria Falls airports and at specified land borders.
- Don't leave with more than $2,000 in cash
Taking more than $2,000 in cash out of Zimbabwe is prohibited, and amounts of $10,000 or more must be declared. UK entry rules
- Visit Hwange and Mana Pools in the dry season
July to October concentrates game at waterholes and along the Zambezi. Many Mana Pools camps close in the rains, roughly November to April.
