Great Zimbabwe is a set of large stone ruins in southeastern Zimbabwe, a short drive from the town of Masvingo. Between about the 11th and 15th centuries it was the center of a Shona kingdom that traded gold and other goods along the coast. The ruins are built from granite blocks fitted without mortar, and the country takes its name from the Shona words for stone houses.
The site has three main areas. The Great Enclosure has a high, curved outer wall, the Hill Complex sits on a granite outcrop above the valley, and the Valley Ruins lie below. A museum on site displays finds from the excavations, including soapstone birds. This is a trip for travelers who want deep history without a long itinerary: a half day covers the main ruins, and a full day leaves time for the hill and the museum. The dry season, roughly May to October, brings clear skies, and the cooler months of May to August suit walking best.
