Venezuela

Go for Angel Falls, flat-topped tepuis, seasonal wetlands on the Llanos and a long Caribbean coast, and plan with current travel advice.

Venezuela is a country on the northern coast of South America, made up of a mainland and many Caribbean islands and islets. Its capital and largest city is Caracas, set in a valley above the port of La Guaira. The mainland borders Colombia, Brazil and Guyana. Its landscapes change sharply by region: the Andes reach Pico Bolívar at 4,979 m, the Llanos plains flood into wetlands in the rainy season, and in the southeast flat-topped tepuis rise around Angel Falls, the world's highest waterfall.

Travelers come for the wildlife, the national parks and the mix of coast and mountain. Canaima, Morrocoy and Mochima are among the parks. Lowlands are hot, while highland páramos above 3,000 m can be cool. The drier months suit the Llanos, when the plains are not flooded. Plan enough days to cover one region at a time, since distances are large. Check current travel advice before you book, because conditions in Venezuela have changed quickly.

Five things to know before Venezuela

  1. Read the current travel advisory first

The FCDO advises against all travel to several regions of Venezuela and against all but essential travel to the rest. It says the rules can change with little warning. UK travel advice

  2. Confirm flights close to departure

The UK says commercial operations resumed at Caracas's Maiquetía airport on 1 September 2026 with limited capacity, and that Valencia and some other airports also operate.

  3. Know the air, land and sea entry rules

UK visitors arriving by air get a tourist card for up to 90 days with a return or onward ticket, and need 6 months' passport validity. Land or sea arrivals may need a visa. Visas and entry

  4. Stay out of the listed no-go zones

The FCDO advises against all travel within 80 km of the Colombian border and 40 km of the Brazilian and Guyanese borders, plus Zulia state, the Orinoco Mining Arc and southern Delta Amacuro.

  5. Get written confirmation of insurance cover

The FCDO says your policy could be invalidated if you go against its advice. If you must travel, confirm medical and evacuation cover for your exact route in writing. Travel insurance
