    Guyana

Kaieteur Falls, the Rupununi savanna and rainforest, with Georgetown on the Atlantic coast and few roads between regions.

Guyana is an Atlantic coast country in northern South America, bordered by Suriname, Brazil and Venezuela. It is the only English-speaking country on the South American mainland, and most of its interior is rainforest. Georgetown, the capital, is a coastal city of wooden colonial buildings and canals. Inland, the Rupununi is open savanna, and Kaieteur Falls drops in one sheer plunge from the Potaro plateau.

People go for Kaieteur Falls, the Rupununi savanna and the Iwokrama Forest. The trip suits travelers who are comfortable with small planes, long road distances and simple lodges outside Georgetown. Flights into the interior are short but depend on weather. A week covers the coast and one inland area. About two weeks lets you add the Rupununi and the forest. Guyana has two rainy seasons, so check the timing before you book.

Five things to know before Guyana

    1. Check how long your visa-free stay is

UK and Canadian citizens need no visa. UK advice says visitors normally get 30 days, while Canada's says tourists can stay up to 90, so confirm your permitted stay on arrival and with Guyana's immigration service. Visas and entry

    2. Book Kaieteur Falls on a small-plane day trip

There is no practical road to Kaieteur, so most visitors fly from Georgetown's Ogle airport in a light aircraft. Flights leave only with enough passengers and can be cancelled by weather.

    3. Carry a yellow fever certificate if you need one

Proof of vaccination is required if you arrive from a country with yellow fever risk. Canada's government also advises the vaccine for your own protection; ask a travel clinic.

    4. Plan the interior around the rainy seasons

The long rains run from about May to August and a shorter wet spell falls around December. Roads to the Rupununi can flood, so leave slack in the plan.

    5. Remember traffic drives on the left

Guyana drives on the left, unlike its neighbors. Georgetown taxis are cheap; agree the fare before you get in, as there are no meters.
