Caracas

Caracas is Venezuela's capital. Go for the Ávila mountains above the city, the historic center around Plaza Bolívar, and arepas and other food from street stalls and restaurants.

Caracas is the capital of Venezuela, set in a long valley in the north of the country with the Ávila mountains rising above the city. Much of the city sits at about 900 meters, so it is cooler than the lowlands. The Teleférico de Caracas cable car climbs toward Mount Ávila, and Ávila National Park covers the slopes behind the city. Check that the cable car is running before you plan around it.

Plaza Bolívar and the streets around it make up the historic center. Museums, Parque del Este and neighborhoods such as Las Mercedes and Altamira show the newer city. Arepas and cachapas are eaten at street stalls and restaurants, and pabellón criollo, a plate of rice, beans and shredded beef, is a common lunch. Caracas suits travelers who want mountain views, museums and local cooking. The rainy season runs from May to November. Two or three days covers the main sights. Check current travel advice before you book.
