Michigan is a Midwestern state bordered by four of the five Great Lakes. It is made up of two peninsulas: the Lower Peninsula, which holds most of the population and the larger cities, and the Upper Peninsula, which connects to it by the Mackinac Bridge. Lake Michigan lines the west side of the Lower Peninsula, so the state has long stretches of sand beach, dunes and harbor towns. Detroit, the largest city, is known for its auto industry history and its music scene, including Motown.
Michigan suits road trips and lake-focused vacations more than a single-city stay. Summer is the main season for beaches and boating. Fall brings color to the forests and quieter shorelines, and winter in the Upper Peninsula is cold and snowy. Plan at least three or four days in one region, and a week or more lets you cover both peninsulas.
Michigan in five
- Rent a car for the trip outside the citiesPublic transit between towns is limited, so rent a car if you leave Detroit or Grand Rapids. Gold Coast and Upper Peninsula stops are much easier by car.Getting around
- Set your clock to Central time in the western Upper PeninsulaMost of Michigan is on Eastern time, but Gogebic and Menominee counties use Central time. Check which zone your ferry, tour or hotel check-in uses.
- Check Mackinac Bridge wind restrictionsThe bridge between the Lower and Upper Peninsulas can restrict high-profile vehicles in strong wind. Check the Mackinac Bridge Authority site before a long drive.
- Book a Mackinac Island ferry for a fixed crossingFerries run from St. Ignace and Mackinaw City, and the island bans cars, so plan the day around the crossing.

Read the guideMichigan FAQ
Is Michigan worth visiting?
Yes. A long weekend in Detroit or Grand Rapids works, and a week lets you add the Lake Michigan shore. The Upper Peninsula adds Lake Superior cliffs, forest and a slower pace.
How many days do you need in Michigan?
Four to five days covers Detroit, Grand Rapids and a stop on the Gold Coast. Add two or three days for the Upper Peninsula and Mackinac Island.
Detroit or Grand Rapids: which is the better base?
Detroit for music, museums and the larger airport. Grand Rapids for a walkable downtown and breweries, with the Gold Coast a short drive away.
Can you visit Mackinac Island as a day trip?
Yes. Ferries from St. Ignace or Mackinaw City make a day possible, but an overnight stay lets you see the island after the day visitors leave.
Is the Upper Peninsula worth the drive?
Yes, if you like lakeshore cliffs, state forests and small towns. It is far from the big cities, so long drives take up much of the trip.
What is winter like in Michigan?
Cold and snowy, with heavy snowfall in the Upper Peninsula, where snow sports are the main draw. Expect slow driving on snowy rural roads.
