Grand Rapids is the county seat of Kent County in western Michigan, on the Grand River about 25 miles (40 km) east of Lake Michigan. It is the state's second-largest city after Detroit and a business and culture center for West Michigan. The city is known as Furniture City for its furniture industry and as Beer City USA for its many craft breweries. Downtown, Alexander Calder's sculpture La Grande Vitesse stands on Vandenberg Plaza, and the Grand Rapids Art Museum faces Maya Lin's Ecliptic at Rosa Parks Circle.

Visitors can spend a day on museums, craft beer and the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park. Heritage Hill, just east of downtown, has roughly 1,300 homes dating from 1848, showing more than 60 architectural styles. The Meyer May House is a Frank Lloyd Wright Prairie-style home from 1908 that is open for tours. Lansing, about 70 miles east-southeast, and Kalamazoo, about 50 miles south, make practical day trips. Outdoor sightseeing works best from late spring to early fall, since winters are cold and snowy.

    Grand Rapids FAQ

How many days do you need in Albuquerque?

Two days cover Old Town, the Sandia tram and a green chile meal. Add a day for Santa Fe or Acoma Pueblo. During the balloon fiesta, plan an early morning at the launch field.

    Is Albuquerque worth visiting?

Yes, if you like Southwest food, mountain views and Route 66. It works best as a base for Santa Fe, pueblos and the Sandias rather than as a long-stay city.

When is the best time to visit Albuquerque?

April to May and September to October. Early October brings the balloon fiesta and crowds; July and August are hot with monsoon storms.

Do you need a car in Albuquerque?

Yes for most trips. The city is spread out, and day trips to Santa Fe, Taos and pueblos are easier by car. Old Town and Nob Hill are walkable once you are there.

    Is Albuquerque safe for tourists?

Visitors usually stick to Old Town, downtown and Nob Hill. Like any big city, stay alert at night and avoid leaving valuables in a parked car.
