Detroit is Michigan's largest city, on the Detroit River across from Windsor, Ontario, and the largest U.S. city on the Canadian border. French explorers founded the settlement in 1701, and the name comes from the French word for strait. Henry Ford's moving assembly line, introduced in 1913, made Detroit the automotive capital of the world. The city was named a UNESCO City of Design in 2015, the first U.S. city to receive the title.
Detroit is known for music, art, architecture and design. Motown Records shaped the city's sound in the 1960s, and techno began here in the early 1980s. Visitors head to the Detroit Institute of Arts and to Art Deco landmarks downtown, including the Guardian Building and the Fisher Building. A 3.5-mile riverfront promenade runs from Hart Plaza to Belle Isle. The warm season runs from May to September. Winters are cold with snow, and public transit is limited, so plan your rides before you go.
