Do US passport holders need a visa for Portugal?

Covers 11 passports and 80 destinations. Rules older than 30 days are flagged for re-check.

Do you need a visa?

How this tool works

We read the official notice for each pair and record the date. Nothing here is generated; a pair with no written check is not shown.

How we check

No visa. US passport holders visit Portugal visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180.

Annex II of the EU visa regulation lists the United States among the nationalities exempt from a visa for stays of no more than 90 days in any 180-day period, and Portugal's foreign ministry lists it too. Those days are shared with every other Schengen country. At your first entry you register in the EES instead of getting a passport stamp. The US State Department's page (Last Updated December 11, 2025) is consistent with the above. It also asks for 2 blank pages for entry.
