Songshan Cultural and Creative Park

Explore Songshan Cultural and Creative Park in Taipei, a former tobacco factory with design shops, art exhibitions, a garden and an ecological pond.

Songshan Cultural and Creative Park in Taipei’s Xinyi District occupies the former Songshan Tobacco Factory, built in 1937. Its factory buildings now hold exhibition spaces, design shops and creative businesses, while gardens and an ecological pond add room to pause between visits. Browse current exhibitions, look for locally designed gifts and walk through the Baroque-style garden. The park is best suited to an unhurried visit; what is on depends on the exhibitions and events running during your stay.

From tobacco factory to cultural park

The site opened in 1937 as the Songshan Tobacco Factory, a major industrial plant established during Japanese rule. Its buildings include the former cigarette-production factory and boiler room, alongside warehouses and other structures that served the factory. Tobacco production ended in 1998.

Taipei designated the former factory a historic site in 2001. The industrial complex was later adapted for cultural and creative use, with the park developing as a base for designers and cultural businesses as well as a venue for exhibitions and performances. The old buildings remain part of the experience: you move between spaces shaped by the site’s industrial past and newer creative uses.

Exhibitions and events take place in the former factory buildings and warehouses. The program changes, so what you can see depends on when you visit. Some events bring together artists from different cities; markets and pop-up displays add more activity at certain times.

The park has also been associated with the Taiwan Design Museum and design-focused shops. Look around the exhibition spaces and boutiques for work by local designers, including crafts and jewellery. Rather than plan around a single permanent display, check what is on during your visit and leave time to explore the buildings at your own pace.

Gardens, pond and a former bathhouse

The grounds offer a change of pace from the indoor exhibitions. A Baroque-style garden and an ecologically landscaped pond sit among the former industrial buildings, with paths and places to pause. The pond area is suited to a slower walk or a quiet break with a book.

Another unusual stop is This Is Not a Library, which occupies a former public bathhouse. The park’s changing uses extend beyond galleries and shops: a machinery repair shed has also been adapted into a snack bar. The old structures give these newer spaces a distinct setting without taking the focus away from the site’s history.

Planning a visit

Allow a couple of hours if you want to walk the grounds, look through the exhibitions and browse the shops. An event or market can add more to explore, so check the park’s program before you go. Early morning is a good choice for a quieter stroll; the park tends to become busier later, particularly when exhibitions or weekend markets are under way.

Eslite shopping centre is nearby, with cafés and restaurants if you want to continue your outing or take a break. The park is open daily from 8 am to 10 pm. Its address is No. 133, Guangfu South Road, Xinyi District, Taipei.
