Sudan

Nubian pyramids at Meroë, Kerma ruins and Red Sea reefs, in a country where civil war has been fought since April 2023.

Sudan sits in Northeast Africa, with a Red Sea coast and borders with Egypt, Libya, Chad and Ethiopia, among others. Khartoum, the capital and largest city, is where the Blue Nile and White Nile meet to form the Nile. The Kerma civilization flourished near Dongola from about 2500 to 1500 BC, and the Kingdom of Kush ruled from Napata and then Meroë, where Nubian pyramids were built between about 800 BC and 100 AD.

Away from the Nile, much of the north is arid desert, and the far south has savanna where gazelles, elephants and lions live. Coral reefs off the Red Sea coast draw divers. The north is driest outside the June to September rains. Since April 15, 2023, the army and the Rapid Support Forces have fought a civil war that reached Khartoum, and most US and European embassies there closed that year. This page cannot recommend a safe route or trip length, so check current government advice before planning.

Five things to know before Sudan

  1. Read the current travel advisory first

Governments including the UK and US advise against all travel to all or large parts of Sudan. Most travel insurance will not cover you where your government advises against travel. UK travel advice

  2. Check the US advisory as well

The US State Department rates Sudan Level 4, do not travel, because of the armed conflict that began in 2023.

  3. Expect very limited consular help

The British Embassy in Khartoum is closed and UK consular support is severely limited. Many other embassies have also suspended operations.

  4. Check visa rules for your passport before you fly

Almost all visitors need a visa arranged in advance through a Sudanese embassy. Rules can change at short notice, so avoid third-party visa sites. Visas and entry

  5. Read your insurance policy before you book

Look for the clause on government travel advice. Specialist cover for high-risk areas exists but is expensive and often excludes the risks that matter most. Travel insurance
