Port Sudan is the main seaport and capital of Red Sea State, on the coast of northeastern Sudan. Its daily life is built around the harbor, ferries and cargo trade. Most travelers come for the sea: coral reefs and islands lie offshore, reached by boat from the city. The old port town of Suakin sits to the south along the coast, with coral-stone buildings from earlier centuries.

Trips here suit divers, snorkelers and anyone who wants a quiet coastal base with some history, and who can manage a basic city. Plan for the cooler months, from November to February, because summer is very hot and humid. Two or three days covers the town, a boat trip and Suakin. Fighting since April 2023 has changed travel to Sudan, so check your government's current advice and entry rules before you book anything.
