Khartoum

Khartoum is where the Blue Nile and White Nile join, with the National Museum in the city and the older city of Omdurman across the White Nile.

Khartoum is the capital of Sudan, in northeastern Africa. The city sits where the Blue Nile and White Nile meet and flow north as the Nile. Across the White Nile lies Omdurman, the older city with a large market and the tomb of the Mahdi, leader of the uprising against Anglo-Egyptian rule in the 1880s. The National Museum holds Nubian artifacts from the Kerma, Napatan and Meroitic periods, the easiest place in the city to see Sudan's ancient past.

Khartoum suits travelers interested in Nile history, museums and the meeting point of the two rivers. Check current government travel advisories before you plan. Since fighting began in April 2023, many governments have advised against travel to Sudan, and many parts of the city have been heavily damaged. If travel is possible, the cooler months from November to February are the most comfortable, though days stay warm. Allow a few days to cover the museum, the river confluence and Omdurman.
