Seville is the capital of Andalusia, on the lower Guadalquivir River in southwest Spain. Its historic center has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987. The Real Alcázar is a palace and garden complex, and its Mudéjar palace was built for Pedro I in the 1360s. Next to it stands the cathedral, a huge Gothic building among the biggest of its style anywhere. Its bell tower, the Giralda, was once the minaret of an Almohad mosque. Across the river, Triana is considered a birthplace of flamenco.
AVE trains run from Madrid to Seville-Santa Justa. Holy Week and the April Fair are the city's best-known festivals, and the fair takes place about two weeks after Holy Week. Summer is very hot, with July and August highs around 36 °C, so plan outdoor sights for the morning. People move from bar to bar for tapas such as fried seafood, spinach with chickpeas and jamón ibérico. Plan two to three days for the center and Triana, and add a day for Itálica, a Roman city about 7 km away in Santiponce.
Seville in five
- Book beds early for Holy Week and the April FairTourist accommodation is limited after recent restrictions on flats rented to tourists, and the city had about 269 hotels in 2025. Book early for these two weeks.
- Plan July and August days around the heatDaily highs often pass 35 °C in July and August, and days above 40 °C occur several times a year. Visit outdoor sights in the morning and carry water.
- Check ozone levels if you have asthmaOzone pollution episodes are a concern in Seville because the city council has no contingency plan. Sensitive travelers, including people with asthma, should check conditions before going out.
- Take the AVE from Santa Justa to MadridAVE high-speed trains run from Seville-Santa Justa to Madrid and other Spanish cities. Trains do not cross the border to Portugal, so for Lisbon take a bus from Plaza de Armas.Getting around
- See Plaza de España before access closesThe plaza is free to enter, but access closes from about 10 pm. Boats can be seen on its canal, which is about 515 metres long.

Read the guideSeville FAQ
Is Seville worth visiting?
Yes for old palaces, flamenco and a riverside walk. The Cathedral, the Alcázar and the General Archive of the Indies are close together in the historic center, so the core of the city is easy to cover on foot.
How many days do you need in Seville?
Two to three days covers the Cathedral, the Alcázar and Triana. Add a day trip to Itálica or Carmona if you want Roman sites or a town outside the city.
How do you get from Madrid to Seville?
By AVE high-speed train, which runs from Madrid to Seville-Santa Justa. Check the timetable and fares on the operator's site before you book, since they change.
Is Holy Week in Seville worth seeing?
Yes if you want processions. The city has 54 local brotherhoods that carry floats through the week, and the April Fair follows about two weeks later.
Is Seville too hot in summer?
For long days out, yes. July and August daily highs are around 36 °C and sometimes pass 40 °C. Sightseeing works best in the morning, with a midday break in shade.
Can you visit Itálica on the way to Seville?
Itálica is about 7 km from the city in Santiponce, so it is a short trip out rather than a stop on the way in. It is a Roman city with a well-preserved amphitheatre.
