The Catalan Pyrenees are the high mountains of northeastern Spain, in Catalonia, along the border with France and Andorra. The best-known area is Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, where high valleys, pine forest and many mountain lakes sit inside one protected park. Nearby, the Vall de Boí has a group of Romanesque churches that are a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Baqueira-Beret ski resort lies in the Val d'Aran to the north.
Hikers go in summer and early autumn, when trails and mountain lodges are open. Skiers come in winter. Distances between the valleys are long, so choose one base valley and check how you will get there before you book. Sort, Puigcerdà and Ribes de Freser are the main towns for shops and services. Plan four or more days to cover the lakes, the churches and one day of hiking or skiing.
