Aragón is a region in northeast Spain that borders France to the north. Its three main areas are the Ebro valley around Zaragoza, the hills and old towns of Teruel province, and the central Pyrenees, where Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park is the best-known protected area. Much of the region's historic architecture is Mudéjar, built by Muslim craftsmen working for Christian patrons, mostly in brick. In Zaragoza, the Aljafería palace and the Basílica del Pilar are the usual first stops.
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for a visit. Summer is hot in the Ebro valley, and the high Pyrenees are snowy in winter. Zaragoza suits first visits and rail links, Teruel suits architecture and quiet stays, and Jaca and Huesca suit hikers and pilgrims. Each area can fill a few days on its own, so pick one or two rather than trying to cover all three on a short trip.
