Benidorm is a coastal city on the Mediterranean in the province of Alicante, in the Valencian Community of eastern Spain. Known as the New York of the Mediterranean, it has more skyscrapers than any other Spanish city. Three beaches hold Blue Flag status: Levante, the longest and liveliest with more than two kilometers of sand; Poniente, calmer and more spacious west of the port; and Mal Pas.
The old town, El Castell, sits on a rocky promontory between the two main beaches, with the port close by. The Balcón del Mediterráneo viewpoint overlooks the bay and Benidorm Island, a small rocky island that closes it. The city is popular with families and with older visitors from northern Europe who spend winters there. Its population swells to around 400,000 in summer, and many visitors come from the United Kingdom. Summer maximums usually range from 28 to 32 °C, and winter maximums are typically 16 to 18 °C. Alicante airport is a short distance away, and Benidorm works as a base for day trips to Altea, Guadalest and Villajoyosa.
Benidorm in five
- Choose Levante or Poniente before the hotelLevante has the bars and clubs; Poniente is wider and quieter and suits families. Hotels on both sit close to the sand, so the real choice is how much noise you want at night.Alicante Province
- Come in from Alicante by bus or TRAMCoaches take about an hour from the Alicante airport area, and TRAM line 1 takes longer but runs along the coast. Check which stop is nearest your hotel before you pick a mode.Alicante travel guide
- Book theme-park days onlineTerra Mítica, Aqualandia and Mundomar are the big draws. Check each official site for opening dates, since several parks close in winter and ticket types vary.
- Go outside August if you canAugust is the peak for crowds, heat and room prices. May, June, September and October bring warm sea and easier beaches, and winter attracts long-stay visitors.Tourist taxes in Europe
- Weigh winter sun against the CanariesBenidorm is mild in winter, but the Canary Islands run warmer from November to March. Benidorm wins on flights and rail links; the islands win on sea warmth.Arrecife and Lanzarote

Is Benidorm worth visiting?
Yes if you want beaches, hotels with pools, theme parks and easy flights. It is not a quiet village, so skip it if you prefer small towns, but it is very good value for families and winter stays.
Which beach is better, Levante or Poniente?
Levante for nightlife and a busier promenade; Poniente for a wider beach and calmer evenings. The old town sits between them and offers the quieter sea views of both.
How do you get from Alicante airport to Benidorm?
By coach in about an hour or by taxi or transfer. TRAM line 1 takes longer but starts from the city. Check timetables for late arrivals, since coaches thin out in the evening.
Can you swim in Benidorm in winter?
Air temperatures are mild, but the sea is cool from December to March. Most visitors walk, cycle or play golf in winter and keep swimming for April to October.
Is Benidorm good for families?
Yes. Poniente has a wide beach and shallow entries, and Terra Mítica, Aqualandia and Mundomar give wet-weather days. Check each park's official site for dates and height rules.
