South Sudan

The reasons to go are Juba, the Sudd wetland and the White Nile, but security, roads and the rainy season shape every trip.

South Sudan is a landlocked country in East Africa, with Juba as its capital and largest city. The White Nile runs south to north through the center of the country and passes Juba, past plains, savannahs, floodplains and forested mountains. At the center lies the Sudd, a vast swamp and one of the world's largest wetlands. English is the official language, and Juba Arabic is the common language of government and city life.

Go for wetlands, river scenery and wildlife, and expect limited infrastructure. Juba is the only large city with reliable infrastructure, and many roads are in poor condition, so overland travel takes planning. Rain usually falls from May to October, so the drier months from roughly November to April suit a trip best. Check current security advice before you book, because fighting intensified in several states in 2025, and use registered guides and licensed operators for any park visit.

Five things to know before South Sudan

  1. Read the current travel advisory first

Governments including the UK and US advise against all travel to all or large parts of South Sudan. Most travel insurance will not cover you where your government advises against travel. UK travel advice

  2. Check the US advisory as well

The US State Department rates South Sudan Level 4, do not travel. It lists armed conflict, crime and kidnapping among the reasons.

  3. Get a visa before you travel

Visitors need a visa in advance, applied for online at the government e-visa portal or through a South Sudanese embassy. Visas and entry

  4. Carry a yellow fever certificate

South Sudan requires proof of yellow fever vaccination for all arriving travelers aged nine months and over.

  5. Read your insurance policy before you book

Look for the clause on government travel advice. Specialist cover for high-risk areas exists but is expensive and often excludes the risks that matter most. Travel insurance
