Boma National Park

Boma National Park

Boma is a remote park in eastern South Sudan, home to antelope and other grazing wildlife. Getting there takes careful planning and the right season.

Boma National Park lies in Jonglei State in eastern South Sudan, close to the border with Ethiopia. It is one of the country's large protected areas, where antelope and other grazing animals roam across open grassland and woodland. Wildlife is the reason to go. It suits travelers who are ready for a long, basic trip with few facilities.

Expect remote travel. Roads are rough, facilities are minimal, and access changes with the rains, so the dry season is the usual window for a visit. Book through a licensed operator, since independent travel is not practical. Check your government's current travel advice and security situation before you book, and arrange transport, permits and a local guide in advance. Plan at least several days, because distances are long and most of the trip is spent on the road.
