Juba

Juba

Juba is South Sudan's capital and the main air gateway to the country, a young city on the White Nile where the river and surrounding grasslands shape daily life.

Juba is the capital and largest city of South Sudan, which became independent from Sudan in 2011. The city sits on the White Nile, where the river runs past swamps, grassland and riverside neighborhoods. Juba International Airport is the main air gateway to the country. Travelers heading into the wider country can arrange onward trips from the city, including to national parks and wildlife areas.

Juba suits travelers who are ready to plan around heat, limited infrastructure and changing conditions. Temperatures are high for most of the year. The drier months, roughly December to March, are the usual choice because roads are easier. Expect limited medical care, so arrange insurance that covers evacuation. Give yourself a few days in the city to sort visas, cash and onward transport. Check current government travel advisories before you book.
