Gangneung is a city on the east coast of Gangwon province, facing the East Sea (Sea of Japan). It is the largest city and economic center of the Yeongdong region, sitting east of the Taebaek Mountains at roughly the same latitude as Seoul. The beaches are the main draw, with Gyeongpo, Anmok and Gangmun among the best known. Jeongdongjin is the best-known sunrise spot, and its station is listed as the closest railway station to the sea in Korea.
Coffee is the other reason people come. Anmok Coffee Street, the city's main café area, began to form in the 1990s, and the Gangneung Coffee Festival runs every October. Gangneung Danoje, one of Korea's oldest festivals, is held in early lunar May, with the Gwanno mask dance as its highlight. KTX trains from Seoul's Cheongnyangni station take about 90 minutes, so a weekend works, though three or four days lets you cover the beaches, the coffee street and a sunrise. Summers are hot and humid, and winters are cool to cold.

How do you get from Seoul to Gangneung?
By KTX on the Gangneung Line from Cheongnyangni Station, or by express bus from Seoul Express Bus Terminal. Book KTX seats on Korail ahead of weekends and summer holidays.
Can you take a train from Busan to Gangneung?
Yes. KTO describes the Donghae Line KTX-Eum linking Busan's Bujeon Station and Gangneung in roughly 3 hours 50 minutes with a few daily services. Confirm current times on Korail.
When can you swim at Gyeongpo or Anmok?
Only during the official season. In 2026 KTO listed July 10 to August 23 for Anmok and Gangmun. Swimming outside the season or at night is not allowed because lifeguards are off duty.
Is Gangneung worth a weekend?
Yes for beaches, coffee and a rail ride along the coast. Add a Seoraksan day if you want mountains, and skip it in the middle of winter if you want swimming.
What is Anmok Beach known for?
The Gangneung Coffee Street, a row of cafés with sea views that grew from roadside coffee vending machines. It is about 15 minutes from the station by bus or taxi.
