Seoul is South Korea's capital and largest city, in the northwest of the country. The Han River divides it into northern and southern halves, and the city sits among hills and mountains, with Bukhansan on its northern edge. Seoul proper had about 9.6 million residents in 2024. The Joseon dynasty built five grand palaces here, mostly in the Jongno and Jung districts, and Gyeongbokgung is the main one.
Beyond the palaces, walk through Bukchon Hanok Village, an old residential district of traditional hanok houses, or follow Cheonggyecheon, a downtown stream that runs west to east to the Han River. Shop at Dongdaemun Market, the largest wholesale and retail market in South Korea, or Namdaemun Market, the oldest continuously running market in Seoul. Namsan Park offers hiking and skyline views, and Bukhansan gives hiking close to the city center. Summers are hot and humid, with the East Asian monsoon from June to July, and winter temperatures can drop below −10 °C.
