Vladivostok is the largest city in Primorsky Krai and Russia's largest port on the Pacific Ocean, on the Sea of Japan around Golden Horn Bay. It sits on the Muravyov-Amursky Peninsula, and its hills give many streets views over the bays and the water. The city is the eastern end of the Trans-Siberian Railway, and since December 2018 it has been the capital of the Far Eastern Federal District. Locals call it Vladik. Its nickname, Europe in the Far East, refers to Russian architecture set in an Asian setting.

Common stops include Eagle's Nest Hill for the view, Pokrovsky Park on its slope, and the Arseniev Museum of Far East History, the main museum of Primorsky Krai. The Pacific Fleet is headquartered here, so parts of the waterfront are military. Russky Island is reached over the Russky Bridge. Early autumn, from September to early October, is usually warm, dry and sunny. Summer is humid and rainy, and winters are cold and dry.

Vladivostok FAQ

Is it safe to travel to Vladivostok right now?

The UK advice to avoid all travel covers all of Russia. FCDO notes its support is very limited in parts of the country because of its size, so check the current advice before any decision.

How far is Vladivostok from Moscow?

Seven time zones: Vladivostok is UTC+10 and Moscow UTC+3. Allow for the gap when contacting the embassy helpline or an insurer, and expect domestic flights or a long rail journey between them.

Can you take the Trans-Siberian railway to Vladivostok?

UK sanctions cover Russian Railways, and FCDO says stations have airport-style security with passports often checked on boarding. Read the sanctions guidance and the advice before any rail plan.

Are there restricted areas around Vladivostok?

FCDO says access to some military and border zones is restricted and needs local permission, with arrest, fines or deportation for those without it. Ask a tour operator whether an excursion enters one.

Is cash accepted in Vladivostok?

Rubles only: FCDO says paying directly in foreign currency is illegal and foreign-issued cards do not work. Change dollars or euros at banks, hotels or exchange bureaus, never with street traders.
