Kamchatka is a peninsula in Russia's Far East, between the Sea of Okhotsk to the west and the Bering Sea and Pacific Ocean to the east. It forms Kamchatka Krai, and its capital, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, sits on Avacha Bay on the Pacific coast. The peninsula's volcanoes are a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Ring of Fire, and Klyuchevskaya Sopka, about 4,750 m high, is the highest of them.
Visitors come for volcanoes, geysers, hot springs and glaciers. The Valley of Geysers lies in the Kronotsky Biosphere Reserve, but a 2007 mudslide partly destroyed it, so some geysers may no longer look as they did. Brown bears are common, salmon runs are large, and whales and sea eagles can be seen. Summer is the main season, with maximum temperatures around 15 to 20 °C, but coastal days are often cool and foggy. The peninsula is usually snow-covered from October to late May. Flights run semi-regularly, and most mountain roads are gravel or dirt, so allow spare days in your plan.

- Read the UK travel advice firstFCDO advises against all travel to Russia, including Kamchatka (advice updated 18 September 2026). Insurance could be invalidated if you travel against it.UK travel advice
- Count the distance to helpIn-person UK support is limited across Russia and very limited in parts because of its size. The embassy is in Moscow, nine time zone hours behind Kamchatka's UTC+12.Moscow
- Get drone permission or leave it homeDrones are illegal in some regions due to military activity. Elsewhere you must get permission from the Russian aviation authority and give your flight route 24 hours ahead.
- Carry cash for the whole stayForeign Visa and Mastercard cards do not work, so ATMs will not help. Paying in foreign currency is illegal; dollars or euros are changed at banks, hotels or exchange bureaus.Cash, cards and SIMs
- Respect volcanic and seismic riskKamchatka is volcanic, and FCDO notes tremors are recorded in Russia throughout the year. Follow local authorities' guidance and ask your insurer about evacuation cover.

Is Kamchatka safe to visit right now?
The UK advice to avoid all travel covers every region of Russia. FCDO adds that its help is very limited in parts of the country because of the size and the security situation.
Can you reach Kamchatka by road or rail?
No road or rail link joins the peninsula to the mainland, so access is by air or sea. Check airline sanctions: UK sanctions cover Aeroflot, Rossiya and Ural Airlines, per FCDO.
Can you fly a drone in Kamchatka?
Only with permission. FCDO says drones are illegal in some regions and need approval from the Russian aviation authority elsewhere, with the route reported 24 hours ahead. Fines apply for breaking the rules.
What if I need help in a remote part of Kamchatka?
FCDO says UK in-person support is very limited in remote parts of Russia. The embassy helpline is +7 495 956 7200; Russian emergency services answer on 112. Insurers may refuse claims made against advice.
Does my phone work in Kamchatka?
FCDO says non-Russian SIMs may lose mobile internet and SMS, and a SIM idle in Russia for 72 hours can lose them when first switched on. Tell friends and family how to reach you.
