Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky

Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is the capital of the Kamchatka region, on Avacha Bay with volcanoes behind the harbor. Most trips into the peninsula start here.

Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is the capital of the Kamchatka region in Russia's Far East. The city sits on Avacha Bay, an inlet of the Pacific, with the Avachinsky and Koryaksky volcanoes rising behind it. It has long been a naval and fishing port. On clear days the volcanoes stand over the harbor, and that view is a big part of why people come.

Most people use the city as a base. The peninsula's main airport is at Yelizovo, a short drive away, and the city has the tour operators, shops and restaurants you need before heading out. From there, trips reach brown bears, geysers and hot springs. Summer, roughly June to September, suits hiking and volcano trips, and winter brings skiing near town. Two or three days in the city works well, and more if you want to reach the national parks.
