Pinhão is a village in the Douro Valley, the terraced wine region along the Douro River east of Porto, in northern Portugal. Most visitors arrive on the Douro line train from Porto. The railway station is decorated with blue and white azulejo panels that show scenes of the grape harvest and the wine trade. The village is compact and easy to explore on foot. The main reasons to go are the port wine estates in the surrounding hills and boat trips on the river.
Pinhão suits a slow trip built around wine, food and views. The grape harvest, usually in September, is the busiest time in the vineyards. Spring and early autumn are the easiest months for walking between the terraces. Plan at least two nights so you can visit a few estates without rushing, and add more if you want to walk the valley paths.
Pinhão in five
- Plan Pinhão as a stop on the lineTrains call at Pinhão between Régua and Tua, so you can ride on after a morning at a quinta. Check CP's Douro line page for your date and leave slack for connections.
- Book estate visits ahead with the estateWine estates around Pinhão take visits by appointment, and many are up steep roads. Confirm directions and a pickup point with the estate, and plan a driver or taxi if you will taste.
- Walk the terraces early or lateThe terraces around Pinhão have little shade in July and August, so walks and estate visits suit the morning or late afternoon. Carry water and check the heat before a longer climb.
- Choose licensed river cruisesDouro boat trips leave from the quays near Pinhão, and licensed operators run short and half-day cruises. Check the sailing time, return and weather before booking.
- Choose between sleeping in Pinhão or RéguaPinhão is a small village with a quay and estates close by; Régua has the museum, more services and the main rail connection. Sleep in Pinhão for early estate visits, in Régua for easier trains.Peso da Régua

What is Pinhão known for?
A small station village in the middle of the Douro vineyards, known for its tiled station panels, river cruises and the estates around it. It is a base for wine and scenery rather than a sightseeing town.
Is Pinhão worth visiting?
Yes for a slow wine trip, a cruise and rail views, especially in spring and autumn. It is a poor choice for a hurried day trip in midsummer, when the heat is intense.
How do you get to Pinhão from Porto?
By CP Douro line train from Porto São Bento or Campanhã, with services on to Pinhão, or by car. Check CP's timetable and notices before you go, because connections are only guaranteed in normal conditions.
Should you stay in Pinhão or Régua?
Stay in Pinhão for estates, quiet evenings and the vines, and Régua for trains, the museum and shops. Many trips use one night in each, moving by train in under an hour.
When is the best time to visit Pinhão?
May to June and September to October for mild weather and vineyard color, with the harvest in September. Midsummer is very hot and winter is wet and quiet.
