Peso da Régua

Peso da Régua

A Douro river town in Port wine country, reached by the Douro railway from Porto or by tourist boat.

Peso da Régua, usually called Régua, is a town in the Vila Real district of northern Portugal and the seat of a municipality with the same name. Port wine has shaped its economy and fortunes, and the town grew into the centre of the Douro wine region through trade. In 1756 the Companhia Geral das Vinhas do Alto Douro marked out the region's vineyards with granite markers, an early system for regulating wine from a demarcated area. In 1988 the Office International de la Vigne et du Vin named the municipality International City of Vine and Wine.

The steep schist slopes above the river shape the look of the vineyards. Tourist boats leave from the town and pass through the locks of two dams, while the Douro railway follows the riverbanks and links Régua with Porto. The Museum of Douro is one of the town's attractions. The climate is Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and cool to mild, wet winters. A day covers the town, a boat or train trip and the Museum of Douro. A longer stay leaves time for vineyard visits upriver.

Peso da Régua FAQ

Is Peso da Régua worth visiting?

Yes as a Douro base for trains, the Museu do Douro and a riverside walk, and as the gateway to Pinhão and the vineyards. It is a working town, so most visitors spend their time at estates and on the river.

How do you get from Porto to Régua?

By CP train on the Douro line from Porto São Bento or Campanhã, taking roughly two hours on the InterRegional services, or by car on the A24. Check CP's current timetable, because some services can run by road.

How much is the Museu do Douro?

The museum lists an 8 euro individual ticket, 4 euros for seniors, students and young card holders, and free entry for children up to 12. It is open daily, with seasonal hours and closures on 25 December, 1 January and 1 May.

When is the Douro Historical Train?

In 2026 CP ran it from 6 June to 18 October on Saturdays, Sundays and some Wednesdays between Régua and Tua. Dates change each year, so check CP for the next season.

Régua or Pinhão: which is better as a base?

Régua is easier for trains, the museum and a town stay. Pinhão sits in the middle of the vineyards, with estate stays and river cruises. Many trips use both, one night each.
