River Gate (North Gate)

Visit Kotor’s River Gate, built in 1540 above the Škurda River. See its Venetian relief and views of the Old Town walls and Kampana Tower.

River Gate, also called the North Gate, is one of the three main entrances to Kotor’s Old Town. Built in 1540, it crosses the Škurda River beside the northern town walls. Its stonework, river views and mountain setting make the approach a quieter alternative to the Sea Gate. Look above the entrance for a relief of a fortress and the Venetian winged lion, then take in the views towards Kampana Tower and the city walls.

A gate built after an attack

The River Gate was built in 1540, following an attack on Kotor in 1539 led by Heyreddin Barbarosa, an Ottoman admiral. The gate commemorates that event. Its position on the north side of the Old Town placed the Škurda River alongside the walls, adding a natural barrier to the town’s defences.

The entrance connects the Old Town with the northern side of Kotor. A stone footbridge crosses the river on the approach, bringing you close to the walls and the gate’s stonework.

The relief above the entrance

Look up at the triangular section above the gate, called a tympanum. It carries a relief of a fortress and the Venetian winged lion holding a closed book. The gate is Renaissance in style and dates to the period when Kotor’s northern defences were being shaped around the river and the town walls.

The River Gate is one of three main ways into the Old Town. The Sea Gate is the main entrance from the bay; the Gurdic Gate is on the southern side. Nearby, Bembo Bastion dates to 1540 and is now an open-air theatre.
