Biogradska Gora National Park

Biogradska Gora National Park

Old forest, a still lake at about 1,094 m and trails into the Bjelasica mountains, in northern Montenegro.

Biogradska Gora is a national park in northern Montenegro, close to the town of Kolašin and the Bjelasica mountains. Its core is a primeval forest that has been protected since the late nineteenth century. Biogradsko Lake, a glacial lake at 1,094 m, sits inside the park, with tall trees along much of its shore. The lake is the main reason most people come.

A walk around the lake takes a few hours, and marked trails climb toward higher lakes and summits for hikers who want more. Give the lake a half day, or a full day if you hike. Summer is the practical season for trails, since high ground can hold snow into late spring. Bring layers, because mountain weather can change quickly. Durmitor National Park lies northwest of here, and people often pair the two.
