Podgorica is the capital and largest city of Montenegro, where the Ribnica river joins the Morača. Unlike most of Montenegro, the ground here is mostly flat. The city sits on the northern edge of the Zeta Plain, and its name means "under the hill," after Gorica, a cypress-covered hill that rises above the center. Ottoman rule from 1474 to 1878 left narrow streets, two mosques and a Clock Tower in the Old Town. The newer center on the right bank of the Ribnica has wide streets and a large central square.
Podgorica suits a stop between trips or a short city break. Lake Skadar is about 15 km north, and the Adriatic coast is roughly half an hour's drive through the Sozina tunnel, so the city works well as a base for day trips to the lake, the sea and the northern mountains. Plan one or two days in the city itself. Summer highs regularly exceed 40 °C in July and August, so visit outside those months if the heat bothers you.
Podgorica in five
- Use it as a hub, not a destinationThe tourism board puts the sea about an hour away and the mountain town of Kolašin about an hour away, 65 km. One night in the capital makes sense before a mountain or lake leg.
- Walk the old quarter and the Clock TowerThe board names the Ribnica delta as the historic center and the Sahat Kula (Clock Tower) as one of the Ottoman structures that survived World War II.
- Take a taxi to Niagara Falls and CijevnaThe tourism board says public transport does not reach the Cijevna canyon area, and names a viewpoint at Deljaj about half an hour from the center. Plan a taxi or a car.
- Use a licensed airport taxiUK advice says not all taxi companies may collect passengers at Podgorica Airport; use a licensed taxi at the terminal or confirm your driver may collect you.
- Tour the Šipčanik cellarThe board says the Šipčanik wine cellar lies 30 m underground and offers tours and tastings throughout the year. Book ahead and pair it with the Niagara Falls trip.

Is Podgorica worth visiting?
As a one-night stop, yes: an old quarter, riverside restaurants and wine cellars. It is not a long-stay destination, so use it as a base for Lake Skadar, the coast or the mountains.
How far is Podgorica Airport from the city?
The tourism board gives 12 km from the capital. UK advice says to use licensed taxis in front of the terminal or confirm that a booked driver may collect you.
What can you do near Podgorica?
Lake Skadar, the Cijevna canyon and Niagara Falls, the Šipčanik wine cellar and the Ćemovsko polje vineyards are all close. The coast and Kolašin are about an hour away.
Is Podgorica a good base for Montenegro?
For lake, wine and mountains yes; for beaches, base on the coast. The capital's hot summers also make the sea a relief by afternoon.
Can you get to Lake Skadar from Podgorica by train?
The rail line to Bar serves the lake area. The Virpazar guide has the train notes; check the timetable before you rely on it and keep a taxi option for the return.
